Monitored Devices

For automatic USB device monitoring (i.e. automatically detected, without USB monitoring rules added), the following USB devices are automatically detected and monitored: external magnetic hard drives, external optical drives (including CD and DVD reader and writer drives), portable flash memory devices, solid-state drives, adapters between standard flash memory cards and USB connections, digital cameras, digital audio and portable media players, card readers, PDAs, and mobile phones.

NOTE: Automatic USB device monitoring is not currently supported for macOS Clients.

For non-automatic USB device monitoring (i.e. with USB monitoring rules added, which are detected similar to alerts), USB devices of the following USB device classes can be monitored, alerted on, and (optionally) blocked:

• Mass storage devices: external magnetic hard drives, external optical drives (including CD and DVD reader and writer drives), portable flash memory devices and drives, solid-state drives, adapters between standard flash memory cards and USB connections, digital cameras, digital audio and portable media players, card readers, and PDAs.

• Portable devices: Audio players, phones, and other devices that use non-standard identifiers.

• Wireless connection devices: Bluetooth adapters, and Microsoft RNDIS.

• Modems and Network adapters: Network interface controllers.

• Audio devices: Speakersmicrophonessound cardsMIDIs, etc.

• Video devices: Web cameras.

• Human interface devices: Keyboards, mouse devices, and joysticks.

• Printers: Laser printersinkjet printers, and CNC computers.

• Composite devices: Devices that consist of one or multiple devices (e.g. keyboards with USB ports).

• Vendor-specific devices: Devices which require vendor-specific drivers (i.e. mobile phones) and whose device class is defined by the vendor.

WARNING: In certain cases, selecting the "Vendor-specific devices" device class may result in all USB devices being blocked.

NOTE: Only the "Mass storage devices" and "Vendor-specific devices" device classes are currently supported for macOS Clients.

Each device class has its own name (e.g. 00, 01, 02, etc), which can be viewed in the device properties. The name of the device class allows you to define which device class the detected device belongs to. For more information, please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB and https://www.usb.org/defined-class-codes.
